Emily Cavagnino
Hello friends,
I find that the Yoga has a way of wiggling its way into your life at the most necessary of times. For me, the practice landed in my lap in my teenage years, and every time I roll out the mat, I’m grateful that I found it so soon in life. It supported me significantly through the ebbs and flows of becoming a woman, a wife and a mother.
As for most, it was initially a very physical practice for me. I loved how it made my body feel; strong, open, fluid and balanced. But as I returned time and time again, the Yoga became so much more. More, but I couldn’t understand, or contextualise exactly the magic that I felt rippling into all facets of my life. This curiosity had me book a flight to India, which is where I completed my first 500 hrs of Teacher Training under the guidance of Master Yogi Chetan Mahesh, at the Association of Yoga & Meditation (AYM) in Rishikesh. After a few months in an Ashram, deep in the roots of Ashtanga Yoga, exploring all limbs daily, my heart and mind wide open. It was, to this day, one of the most incredible experiences, and it transformed my life path for the good.
Returning to my hometown of Coffs had me eager to share. Not long thereafter, I founded ‘The Loft: Yoga & Pilates’ at the Jetty. This later became Melting Pot Yoga, and the foundation of me growing into the teacher I am today. We were lucky to establish a thriving Yoga hub enriched by community, but sadly, we closed our doors when Covid hit. Opportunities arose in Sydney, which was where I relocated to in 2019. Here, I was very fortunate to step into a full-time Teaching Lead position at Humming Puppy and then Modern Movement soon after. Both of these reputable studios encouraged me to ‘level up’ my teaching skills and exposed me to Teacher Training experiences and the vast world of teaching virtual Yoga. It was during my time in Sydney that I was able to learn from Yoga pioneers Simon Park, Maty Ezraty, Noelle Connelly, Duncan Peak, Katie Rose & Janet Stone, both online and in person. I am very grateful for my experiences in the city, but the calling back to my hometown of Coffs was strong when my beautiful wife and I decided to start a family. There’s really no looking back.
My 9-5 is as a Mindfulness Coach in my own busy venture, The Calm Down. I am fortunate to be able to translate Yoga concepts to really busy corporate people. I feel great joy in being able to share Yoga to the masses (even though they might not know it!). Oh, I am also studying Psychology and find it fascinating that these worlds actually collide beautifully.
Landing back at Wilderness Yoga is a blessing. I reflect on my days here as a teenager, practising Mysore Ashtanga in the original banana shed dwelling and I never could have dreamed up the full-circle unfolding. Thank you for having me.
